Montréal, QC – At 533 Ontario Street East, in downtown Montreal, lies a unique and vibrant space: the Afromusée. Founded by Guy Mushagalusa Chigoho, who also serves as its Executive Director, the establishment is much more than a museum. It is a place of remembrance, celebration, and promotion of Afro-descendant heritage in Quebec and Canada.

“The Afromusée has officially existed since 2017, but it was actually born from the experience of the Mia Galouza space, a well-known art gallery in Montreal,” explains Mr. Mushagalusa. This first initiative already offered a privileged space for artists from African-descendant communities while highlighting the traditional arts of the African continent.

The Afromusée operates as a social economy enterprise, a model that allows it to ensure financial autonomy while remaining true to its community mission. “We have a multifunctional space here that represents an important source of income. This allows us to keep our minds free,” states the founder.

In addition to its autonomous revenues, the museum benefits from various forms of support: government institutions, private companies, community organizations, but also — and above all — the invaluable support of the public. This synergy enables it to build meaningful and sustainable projects.

The Afromusée’s mission is clear: to research, preserve, and disseminate everything related to the experience of people of African descent in Montreal, Quebec, and Canada. This institution acts as a bridge between cultures, generations, and memories.

“We are truly happy and proud to see how we are regarded — both by individuals and institutions. It’s very encouraging for the future,” says Mr. Mushagalusa, visibly moved by the warm and growing reception to his initiative.

The Afromusée invites all generations to discover its exhibitions, cultural events, and educational initiatives. For a full experience, visit 533 Ontario Street East in Montreal, or check out the official website: afromusee.org

“Come see us in person, we will always be happy to welcome you,” concludes Guy Mushagalusa.
