Montreal, Quebec — In the borough of Saint-Léonard, an exceptional woman continues to leave a mark on her community with unwavering dedication. Madame J., founder of a community organization active since 1981, embodies the spirit of solidarity through her commitment to food security for the most vulnerable. Alongside devoted volunteers, she leads a food bank that feeds hundreds of families every week.
> “I am passionate when it comes to helping and getting involved with people,” says Joan Coléot, host of the gathering.
Madame J. founded her organization while working night shifts as a certified nursing assistant. Driven by a desire to support her fellow citizens in their integration and well-being, she launched the initiative without resources or facilities, but with an unbreakable determination.
> “I wanted to help my fellow citizens feel fully Canadian and Quebecois. Since 1981, I’ve never stopped, and I will only stop when I’m no longer able to,” she shares emotionally.
Initially working in collaboration with Moisson Montréal for small-scale food distributions, the initiative has grown significantly. Today, every Thursday, the team welcomes up to 138 families in need, delivering essential food baskets.
The weekly operation is supported by a loyal team of volunteers. Together, they mobilize as early as 5 a.m. to unload trucks, sort food products, and welcome recipients with dignity and respect.
> “Without our volunteers, none of this would be possible,” says Madame J. “Their commitment is invaluable.”
During the event, a special invitation was extended to volunteers and board members present, to acknowledge their outstanding contributions.
Mr. Basa, president of the organization Development and Peace, also spoke about his long-standing collaboration with Madame J.
> “We’ve been working together for over 35 years. What I admire about her is that she acts directly on the ground. Her example inspires others to believe that everyone can make a difference in their own way,” he states.
Donations received through Moisson Montréal play a crucial role in the organization’s mission. During the pandemic, the team never stopped its activities, even delivering food baskets directly to beneficiaries' homes.
> “The donations allowed us to continue our mission, even during the toughest times. We saw the grateful smiles of families. That gives us the strength to keep going,” testifies the association’s president.
Madame Paulette, also involved in the organization, highlights the criteria for selecting families: income, social situation, and food needs. She notes a significant increase in demand, particularly due to the rising cost of living.
> “Unfortunately, sometimes we can’t help everyone. But we do our best to ensure no one leaves empty-handed,” she confides.
Mr. Caravo, a board member, describes one of the organization’s greatest challenges: the lack of resources.
> “Sometimes, the baskets are not enough. In those cases, we share what’s left. We hope Moisson Montréal can increase its support because the needs keep growing.”
Founded on principles of solidarity and social justice, the association also relies on word of mouth and community mobilization to spread awareness and attract more volunteers.
In conclusion, Madame J. issues a heartfelt call:
> “I invite everyone to get involved. Every action counts. Together, we can continue to feed not only bodies but hearts as well.”
