YEMBA Montreal Festival | Why Is This Cameroonian Community Coming Together?

Preserving cultural identities and promoting dialogue between communities were at the heart of the 8th edition of the Yemba Canada Festival, organized on July 4, 2026, by the non-profit organization Yemba Canada. The event highlighted the Yemba language, spoken in the western region of Cameroon, as well as the traditions and values that are part of this cultural heritage.
Through this gathering, organizers emphasized the importance of passing cultural traditions on to future generations while encouraging exchanges with the different communities that make up Canadian society.
“We are now at our 8th edition, and it is important for us to highlight the promotion of cultural diversity,” explained Lionel Fredy Fet, a member of the Yemba Canada Festival organizing committee and head of logistics. According to him, the goal is also to allow local communities to discover other cultures in order to strengthen integration and social connections.
“It is important to allow communities that are part of this diversity to discover and experience the culture of other countries in order to encourage integration for us, as African descendants living in this beautiful welcoming land that is Canada,” he added.
This edition was marked by the exceptional presence of His Majesty the chief king of the Bafou community in Cameroon, who travelled specifically to take part in the festival’s activities. His participation represented a significant moment for attendees, strengthening the connection between the diaspora and ancestral traditions of the Yemba people.
The Yemba Canada Festival also attracted many participants from different backgrounds, including Canadians interested in discovering this culture from Cameroon. For organizers, this growing participation reflects the increasing interest in events that encourage intercultural encounters.
“Canada is a land of diversity. Today, we are celebrating the 8th edition of the Yemba Canada Cultural Festival,” said a community member involved in the celebration. He explained that these cultural gatherings provide an opportunity to share their identity while contributing to the social development and growth of association members.
The program also reflected this spirit of openness through the participation of a Peruvian dance group, adding an international dimension to the event and highlighting the importance of exchanges between different cultures.
Beyond the performances and celebrations, the Yemba Canada Festival has established itself as a space for cultural transmission, pride, and dialogue. By bringing different communities together around shared heritage, the event contributes to showcasing the richness of African cultures while strengthening connections within a diverse society.
