Montreal — What is the true meaning of life? For many, the answer lies in fulfilling a deeper purpose — one rooted in kindness, resilience, and the recognition of life as a divine gift.
During a recent discussion with community seniors, themes of gratitude, purpose, and perseverance emerged as guiding principles for living a meaningful life.
One speaker reflected on the importance of understanding one’s mission on Earth. “Life is about living out your purpose,” he said. “God put you here for a reason. When my time comes, I hope I will have fulfilled what He wanted for me — whether through kindness, teaching others, or simply living in alignment with His will.”
For him, life is not something to be taken for granted but a precious gift. He credits his late mother as a profound inspiration in shaping his values. “She gave me life and guided me through life’s journey — teaching me what I should and should not do. Those lessons are priceless,” he shared.
Having grown up in Jamaica before moving abroad, the speaker explained how new cultural experiences transformed his perspective on health and compassion. “As a boy, I never saw people as sick as I see them now in this country. It changed my way of thinking — to approach and treat people differently, with more understanding. It also reminded me to care for myself, because life is fragile and short.”

Passing this wisdom forward has become central to his purpose. He urges young people, including his children and grandchildren, to see life as more than just existence. “Life is not merely living — it is a gift from God, and we should care for it and pass that knowledge on.”
The discussion also turned to the challenges faced by older generations. The advice was simple but powerful: stay active and remain engaged. “Don’t give up. Do what you can,” one senior encouraged. “Even if it’s just walking down the block or in your apartment lobby, keep moving. Push yourself a little more each day. Life is good — we’re alive, we’re breathing. So enjoy it when you can.”
Another echoed the importance of keeping the mind and spirit active. “Once your mind begins to shut down, you have a problem. Stay involved in something positive. Interact with others. Be an example for the younger ones. Sometimes all a fellow senior needs is encouragement to step outside and connect.”
The collective wisdom of these voices carries a unifying message: life should be lived with intention, resilience, and gratitude. Seniors emphasize not only caring for one’s own health and mindset but also sharing knowledge and encouragement with others.
As one participant concluded:
“Keep your mind growing, think positively, and live in a way that uplifts others. Life is precious — protect it, cherish it, and let it inspire those who come after you.”
