Montreal, QC – Under the evocative theme of community engagement, the third edition of NSK’s Annual Gala of Recognition for Public Safety gathered this past weekend a vibrant crowd of community leaders, dignitaries, volunteers, and engaged citizens. Organized by NSK (Nou Se Kapab), this milestone event aimed to highlight the tireless efforts made to strengthen social cohesion, particularly within Montreal’s Black communities.
Pamela Hernandez, the evening’s host, set the tone: “We do what we can, we do it because we are capable.” A message that perfectly encapsulates the very essence of the NSK initiative — a collective determination to build a safer and more inclusive future.
Over the past few years, numerous initiatives have been implemented to support communities. Among them, the $200 million fund dedicated to the Black Community Support Initiative has emerged as a major tool to strengthen the capacity of organizations working within these communities. Complementing this is the Black Entrepreneurship Program, which aims to support entrepreneurs from these backgrounds through concrete funding and personalized guidance.
However, these programs are nearing their end — with the scheduled conclusion set for March 31, 2025. Several speakers emphasized the urgent need to extend these measures to ensure the continuity of their impact.
The gala was an opportunity to pay tribute to key figures, such as Madame Félicidade Jac, recognized for her exceptional dedication to the Saint-Léonard community. “You can be proud of your career and everything you’ve accomplished,” noted one speaker to resounding applause.
Also in attendance, Christophe Ministre, responsible for the Fight Against Racism and for the Laval region, reminded the audience:
“What NSK is doing, particularly to help young people get off the streets through sports, is fundamental. Everyone can do their part. And the sum of all these small actions becomes real change.”
Among the distinguished guests was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces from the Haitian community, who stressed the importance of building bridges between the youth of Saint-Léonard and federal institutions.
“It’s crucial that our youth can envision themselves in the Canadian Forces, that they feel these institutions are for them too.”
He encouraged young people to enlist, highlighting the values gained: leadership, self-confidence, and initiative.
John Lepierre: The Pillar Behind NSK
NSK President John Lepierre was unanimously praised for his dedication. Visibly moved, he stated:
“We must work in collaboration with all communities: Haitian, African, Arab, Quebecois, Italian… Together, we move forward.”
He also issued a passionate call:
“In 2024, we’re aiming for 1,500 participants at the gala. The youth are the future. With love, we can mobilize all communities.”
The evening concluded in a festive atmosphere, with emotional testimonies, artistic performances, and enthusiastic applause. Several participants, like Madame Joseph, expressed their gratitude:
“I didn’t expect so many honors… it was a magnificent gala, it felt like we were celebrating my own retirement!”
The 2025 NSK Gala not only celebrated community efforts but also planted seeds of hope for a future where inclusion, public safety, and youth empowerment are at the forefront of priorities. It has become an essential annual gathering for those building a more equitable Quebec.
