The fourth edition of the Rwanda Youth Convention North America 2023 brought together over 1,500 participants from Rwanda, the United States, and Canada, offering a platform for young Rwandans in the diaspora to connect, learn, and contribute to the development of their homeland.
The event, organized by the International Rwanda Youth for Development, featured discussions on youth empowerment, mental health, financial literacy, and intergenerational dialogue. Moses Gash, co-president and co-founder of the organization, emphasized the importance of connecting young people with leaders in the diaspora and fostering meaningful conversations about Rwanda’s continued growth.
Participants shared reflections on the significance of the convention. Benisha, also known as “The Ben,” expressed her honor at being part of the event, calling it a valuable opportunity for networking and personal growth. Bishop Abza from Arizona highlighted the importance of loving and investing in one’s country, noting that reconnecting with Rwanda strengthens both individual and community development.
The convention also spotlighted initiatives supporting vulnerable children in Rwanda. Joselyn and Josephine from Ottawa encouraged attendees to engage with programs like Shelthem, which enables children to grow into independent adults, emphasizing that even small contributions can make a meaningful impact.
Entrepreneurship and financial education were central themes. Alpha, a youth business mentor, encouraged attendees to invest in properties and take control of their financial futures. Serge Nzi, a stand-up comedian from Ottawa, noted that the event provided young artists with valuable lessons on collaboration, community building, and resilience.
A prominent message of perseverance was delivered by Major Char Doos, a retired member of the Canadian Armed Forces, who urged participants to remain resilient in pursuing their goals. “Life is like climbing a mountain,” he said. “Take one step at a time, hold on, and keep climbing until you reach your goals—for yourself and for Rwanda.”
The convention also facilitated an exhibition showcasing Rwandan businesses, providing young entrepreneurs an opportunity to highlight their products and services. Corporate and institutional partners, including the Bank of Kigali, the International Organization for Migration, the Rwandan Canadian Healing Center, and the Harmony Foundation of Canada, supported the event, further enhancing its reach and impact.
Organizers underscored the convention’s dual purpose: to empower Rwandan youth abroad while strengthening ties between diaspora communities and Rwanda. By sharing values, experiences, and knowledge, attendees are encouraged to contribute positively both to their local communities and to Rwanda’s sustainable development.
As the event concluded, participants left inspired and motivated, carrying forward lessons of leadership, community engagement, and resilience. Moses Gash highlighted the organization’s commitment to providing a continuous platform for young Rwandans to thrive professionally, socially, and personally.
The Rwanda Youth Convention North America continues to demonstrate the potential of diaspora engagement, showcasing how shared values, mentorship, and empowerment can drive meaningful change for both individuals and the nation.
